Who is Sanjay Gupta?
Heroes are present in every generation. Others find them in mythology. Others discover them in the movies. But for millions of Indians, their heroes were in the vibrant pages of Raj Comics. Heroes such as Nagraj, Doga, Bhokal, Parmanu, Tiranga, Inspector Steel, and Shakti turned into more than just fictional characters. They were a symbol of courage, justice, sacrifice, and hope. They made children dream bigger, believe in themselves, and proudly embrace Indian culture. There's an amazing storyteller behind these legendary characters, Sanjay Gupta.
Sanjay Gupta is the co-founder of Raj Comics and was responsible for bringing about the creation of India's very own superhero universe when the American and international comic universe ruled the day. He did not want to copy the characters of the Western superheroes but wanted to create new, original characters with a strong Indian mythological, historical, traditional, and social background.
He has developed more than 1000 original characters and has been involved in writing more than 2200 comics in 40 years, thus being one of the most influential comic creators and storytellers in India. Now, via Alpha Comics, he is pursuing the same cause, producing fresh content, providing guidance to new creators, and continuing to inspire the next generation of Indians with their superhero tales. In this exclusive Founder Spotlight with Fixnhour, Sanjay Gupta speaks about creativity, entrepreneurship, storytelling, and the legacy of creating India's most iconic comic universe.
Q1. Mr. Gupta, what inspired you to create Raj Comics?
All my life, I always thought that there were so many stories in India that needed to be told. We have one of the world's richest cultural and mythological heritages, but few comic books cover our heroes and traditions. The realization was the genesis of Raj Comics. We didn't take ideas from anywhere else; we wanted to come up with heroes that the Indian readers can relate to. Speakers of our language, a people of our culture and values. The initial idea behind the creation of Raj Comics was a simple one: India needed its own superheroes.
Q2. Characters like Nagraj, Doga, and Bhokal have become legends. What made them so special?
All successful characters start off with emotion, not superpowers. Characters are memorable due to challenges, character, and values. Nagraj represented responsibility. Doga symbolized justice. Bhokal reflected courage. Every hero was strong, had a weakness, was emotional, and had conflicts with people. They felt real, even though they were super-powered, so they attracted readers. Memorable characters aren't just about powers; it's about purpose.
Q3. You've created more than 1,000 characters and over 2,200 comics. What keeps your creativity alive?
Curiosity. The world is in constant flux, and every change in the world is a story. I am constantly witnessing society, cultural norms, human emotions, and human history. Stories exist everywhere. It's the job of a storyteller to just acknowledge them. I've learned a lot over the years, and I still have a lot left to learn because imagination is an unending line. There will always be somebody who has a story to tell as long as there are people.
Q4. Raj Comics shaped the childhood of millions. Did you imagine such an impact?
Just telling stories was our first objective, in all honesty. We never thought that these characters would be part of Indian popular culture. The best part is reading what readers have said about how our comics encouraged them to become artists, writers, and creators, influenced their values and ideas, or inspired their childhood. If your work becomes a part of people's memories, it becomes more than just entertainment. It's a privilege and a responsibility.
Q5. Why is storytelling so important?
Stories connect people. Even before the advent of technology, civilizations were known to preserve knowledge through stories. Stories teach values. They inspire courage. They preserve culture. They enable us to learn more about ourselves and about our fellow man. Comics have always been more than just fun things for me. These are a medium to imagine, learn, and connect with. A powerful story has the ability to influence generations.
Q6. What has entrepreneurship taught you?
Entrepreneurship and storytelling are very analogous. Both require vision. Both involve uncertainty. Both demand persistence. It was not easy to make Raj Comics; creating anything new always comes with its own set of challenges. But each challenge only made us more determined to go further. The greatest thing I learned is that when you have a vision and you believe in it, it will become successful in time.
Q7. Through Alpha Comics, you're creating dozens of new stories every year. What motivates you to continue?
Creativity never retires. All generations need their story. People read content differently in this day and age, but their imagination is the same. We have a lot of fun experimenting with new characters, stories, and creative talent with Alpha Comics. Our ministry is the same. Maintain the continuity of Indian stories. Continue to encourage young readers. Continue creating "worlds" that people love.
Q8. What advice would you give aspiring writers and creators?
Read constantly. Observe carefully. Write fearlessly. Originality is yours and stems from what you've experienced and how you look at it. Avoid following trends. Rather, write stories in your own voice. Most importantly, be patient! All great storytellers are a product of time. Practice, curiosity, and persistence foster creativity.
Q9. How do you see the future of comics in India?
I'm convinced that the future is very exciting. New opportunities are arising for storytelling in digital platforms, animation, games, films, and AI. Home-grown content is now becoming more popular in India. This opens up the huge possibilities for original comic universes, graphic novels, and transmedia storytelling. This future generation of Indian creators can shape the creation of globally recognized IPs. I feel that India's storytelling adventures have just started.
Q10. What role does culture play in your creative process?
Stories have a life of their own in the form of culture. The endless inspiration comes from Indian mythology, traditions, folklore, history, and values. Never have we sought to replicate global stories. Rather we wanted to honour the uniqueness of India. Stories tied to their cultural roots are timeless stories. This attitude has been our guiding principle for all our comics.
Q11. How has Fixnhour contributed to founder visibility?
Every business or organization has a history. Each founder has a "journey."Business platforms, such as Fixnhour, are a chance for entrepreneurs to share those journeys beyond business milestones. Founder stories foster trust. They humanize brands. They serve as role models for aspiring entrepreneurs. This visibility adds value to the whole entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Q12. What legacy would you like to leave behind?
Hopefully people will keep in mind that the imagination of the Indians has no boundaries. If we have helped kids dream, inspired creators to write, and boosted their pride in Indian stories, then our journey has been worthwhile. Characters can be located in comic books. However, their effect is within people. That's the real power of storytelling. Wishing you all a terrific 2013 in the best possible ways!
